Soviet Jews in the Red Army

In this photo made Wednesday, April 17, 2013, Soviet Jewish World War Two veteran David Rivelsky poses for a portrait at his house in Jerusalem, Israel. In 1941, he took part in the heroic defense of Leningrad, as part of the Leningrad Front for which in 1943 was awarded with the medal “Defense of Leningrad”. Rivelsky immigrated to Israel in August 1999 from St. Petersburg. About 500,000 Soviet Jews served in the Red Army during World War Two, and the majority of those still alive today live in Israel.
