ALL 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest – in HIGH RESOLUTION. Part 1: “Places”, Weeks 1-3

“The reindeer herder”. A reindeer herder from the South Sami group of Saanti Sijte in Norway is approaching the herd to prepare the separation of reindeers. Winter is slaughtering time. There is very little daylight, it is 25 degrees below zero in the mountains, and there are very few people who do this hard work. The Sami are an indigenous people in Norway. The reindeer husbandry is the most important part of their culture, but only 1200 people in the country do reindeer herding as a daily work. Photo location: Harsjøen, Røros municipality, Norway.
