An unwanted souvenir: A man who went to hospital with stomach pains was found to have a surgical clamp inside his belly – from an operation 37 years before. Liu Mou, from China, had gastric ulcer surgery in 1974 and had frequently suffered stomach pains in subsequent years. He comments: “I thought it was my old stomach problems and each time I took stomach medication or anti-inflammation pills to relieve the pain”. With the pains getting worse Liu went back to hospital – and doctors discovered the 10cm long instrument before removing it in a two hour operation. According to doctors Liu was lucky because part of the abdominal wall had wrapped around the clamp, preventing it from moving and potentially causing serious internal injuries.
