In this picture taken on Sunday, March 5, 2017, a Tehran's urban animal control worker catches a stray dog after being shot with his anesthetic dart on the outskirts of the capital Tehran, Iran. The shelter has been hired by the Tehran city government to take a new, more humane approach to deal with the burgeoning problem of stray dogs in the capital. It’s a sign of changing attitudes among officials in a country where Islamic authorities long saw dogs as “un-Islamic” and would at times confiscate them from people who kept them as pets. A couple hugs while standing near a Christmas tree made out of plastic bins and plastic hampers outside the Museum of History in Monterrey, Mexico, December 4, 2015. The humble Christmas tree has a rich history, from evergreen trees used to symbolise eternal life in Ancient Egypt to tree worship among pagan Europeans. The modern version has its origins in Germany, where the song “O Tannenbaum” is still a festive favourite. Today the traditional tree with lights and decorations appears in cities including Washington, Moscow and Beirut. Alternative constructions range from recycled rubbish in Mexico City to old window frames in Rakvere, Estonia. Whatever the shape or size, the message is the same: Merry Christmas. Fresa, 5, stands inside the dog shelter “Santuario Milagros Caninos” on the outskirts of Mexico City August 29 2014. Fresa underwent reconstructive surgery after her previous owners hacked off half of her snout with a sharp object, possibly a machete, according to surgeon Jesus Paredes. After neighbours found Fresa wandering on the streets, they handed her over to a shelter where Paredes performed a three-hours intervention to enable her to breathe again through her nostrils, to remove her protruding jaw and reconstruct the lips with flaps of skin and mucous. The Dwarf Empire theme park opened in mid-2009, employing a number of dwarves to create the show. Depending on what type of job they do at the park, employees earn between 800-2,000 CNY (100-250 Euros) per month, most of which goes towards their savings as lodging is provided, and their living quarters are equipped with kitchens where they prepare their own meals. 19th March 2013: In celebration of the Spring Solstice 2013 and in conjunction with the release of Twentieth Century Fox's 3D animation ‘THE CROODS’ - a family animation centered around the first ever pre historic road trip - a giant monument was erected at Stonehenge at sunrise today, Tuesday 19th March. This marks the first time a modern structure has EVER been allowed on this historic site. The Spring Solstice or ‘Vernal Equinox’ recognises the first day of spring and each year sees druids and pagans gather at Stonehenge early in the morning to watch the sun rise above the prehistoric stones. This year an additional monument, in the shape of ‘THE CROODS’, will become part of these special celebrations at daybreak. ‘Meet the first modern family, THE CROODS, whose world is rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts that come to a head on a wild road trip filled with dazzling adventures, amazing firsts (like fire…and shoes), never before seen creatures and the epic discovery that they’ll have to stay one step ahead of the ever-changing world or get left in the prehistoric dust.’ DreamWorks Animation SKG presents THE CROODS. The film is directed by Chris Sanders & Kirk DeMicco, and produced by Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell. The screenplay is by Kirk DeMicco & Chris Sanders, with a story by John Cleese, Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders. The music is by Alan Silvestri. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Grug, Ryan Reynolds as Guy, Emma Stone as Eep, Catherine Keener as Ugga, Clark Duke as Thunk, and Cloris Leachman as Gran. THE CROODS presents an age known as the Croodaceous Period, which, says DeMicco, “fell between the Jurassic Age and the ‘Katzenzoic Era’– at least according to DreamWorks archaeologists.” It is a world of visual splendor and grandeur that holds innumerable challenges for the beleaguered clan

Retired builder Vasili Sidamonidze, 70, poses for a portrait at his home in Gori, Georgia, December 6, 2016. “Unfortunately, Stalin is not popular nowadays. Our people don't respect him. Only we, members of the (Communist) Party, respect him”, Sidamonidze said. “I always try to attend Stalin's birthday anniversaries in Gori. Unfortunately many people don't want to join us even if they live nearby. They look at us from their windows”. Stalin, who was born in Gori in 1878 and died in 1953, is largely reviled today in Georgia, which regained its independence during the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Over the years, his memorials have been dismantled, most recently in 2010 when authorities removed a statue of the dictator from Gori's central square. But Stalin is still revered by a small group of mainly elderly supporters who stress his role in the industrialisation of the Soviet Union and in defeating Nazi Germany in World War Two. Each Dec. 21, a few dozen people mark his birthday by gathering outside a Gori museum dedicated to Stalin, where they make speeches and walk to the square where a 6-meter-high bronze statue of him once stood, calling for it to be reinstated. Opponents say it was a symbol of Moscow's still lingering shadow. In 2008, Russia fought a brief war with Georgia and recognised its breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. (Photo by David Mdzinarishvili/Reuters)
