The $12 billion utility's research team Southern California Edison is testing everything from charging electronic vehicles via cell phone to devices that smooth out the power created by rooftop solar panels. Those are some of the roughly 60 projects in the works at Edison's Advanced Technology division. It has a small $19 million annual budget, but its influence far exceeds that. In this November 9, 2014 photo, a man sits on the rope holding his bull by the neck as he waits to enter it in a bull fight in Leogane, Haiti. The obscure Haitian practice of fighting bulls is brutal like a cock or dog fight, but on a larger scale. A casual pastime for some rural men, it is serious business for others looking to pay their children's school fees or even buy a car. (Photo by Dieu Nalio Chery/AP Photo)

A firefighter carries a woman from her car after it was caught in street flooding as a powerful storm moves across Southern California on February 17, 2017 in Sun Valley, California. After years of severe drought, heavy winter rains have come to the state, and with them, the issuance of flash flood watches in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, and the evacuation of hundreds of residents from Duarte, California for fear of flash flooding from areas denuded by a wildfire last year.
