Jenny Odell repurposes online imagery mostly from Google Maps, but also from YouTube, Craigslist, and other sites. In her “Satellite Collections”, for example, she incorporated aerial views of swimming pools, basketball courts, parking lots, and other recognizable structures, seen from space. Her more recent series, “Satellite Landscapes”, includes painstakingly isolated Google Maps imagery of oil refineries, wastewater treatment plants, solar farms, etc. This work is meant as a reminder of our physically determined and vulnerable existence, since we depend on many of these things for survival and maintenance of our way of life. In a remote location in rural America, a photographer has discovered a rather unique gathering: row after row of presidential busts. Like a zombie graveyard, the field contains 43 gigantic sculptures, ranging from Dick Nixon and FDR to JFK and Honest Abe. The likenesses weigh between 11,000 and 20,000 pounds, with some standing as tall as 20 feet. Almost all the busts are cracked, crumbling and worn by the elements, adding to their eerie appearance but not preventing the presidents from being recognizable at first glance. The photograph you see above isn’t the result of Photoshop or infrared photography. Captured by Spanish photographer Palíndromo Mészáros, it shows what the landscape of Ajka, Hungary looked like half a year after the Ajka alumina plant accident — an industrial disaster in which 35 million cubic feet of toxic waste flooded the land to a height of around 6.5 feet. Mészáros lined up the thick red line caused by the sludge with the horizon line to obtain this surreal image.
