From Britain to China to Mali, new maps showing travel times to the nearest urban centre reveal huge differences between countries. Using Open Street Map and Google, a University of Oxford team have created a visual breakdown that suggests major inequalities when it comes to commuting. Here: China. The dataset used for China was unique as it relied solely on Open Street Map, due to restrictions on accessing Google data. The population is densely concentrated in the east and accessibility is increased, whereas rural provinces in the west remain remote. A genetically engineered featherless rooster struts around the campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Department of Agriculture May 22, 2002 in Rehovot, Israeli. After two years of research, departmental scientists announced the naked chicken, as it has been dubbed, as a low calorie bird because the lack of feathers means the chicken has less fat. It also matures earlier than its feathered counterparts. (Photo by Moshe Milner/GPO/Getty Images)

The sculptures of Montreal-based Maskull Lasserre address structures of authority, class and value in nostalgic, allegorical and humourous ways. Oracle, an anatomically correct jaw carved into the corner of a picture frame, is a delicate yet slightly sinister imposition on an everyday object. Lasserre has exhibited throughout Canada, and at the New York Museum of Arts and Design. He completed his MFA at Concordia University.
