The Pothole Gardener

Steve Wheen understands that nobody likes to pay a pile of taxes only to hit potholes on their way to work every day, so he started filling up the pesky cracks in East London with mini living worlds comprised of soil, plants, and adorable props. The guerrilla gardener creates these mini (mostly domestic) scenes on quiet streets, dead end lanes, and foot paths, snaps photographs of his work, and then removes the props so that nobody gets a chair in their tire! When he's satisfied with his projects, he documents them over at The Pothole Gardener.

When she was starting out in Paris, Roy became influenced by Guy Bourdin, whose fashion photography contained strange, often haunting narratives. She liked the idea of “making little stories” in a single frame. (Photo by Kourtney Roy/Galerie Catherine et André Hug/The Guardian)

Kourtney Roy makes eerie self-portraits in desolate yet dramatic locations – with wigs and wardrobe straight out of 1950s melodrama. In these shots, from her “Enter as Fiction – California” series, she plays characters caught in desolate, often abandoned settings. (Photo by Kourtney Roy/Galerie Catherine et André Hug/The Guardian)

In this Thursday, May 8, 2014 photo, Iranian coal miners push metal carts to be loaded with coal at a mine near the city of Zirab 212 kilometers (132 miles) northeast of the capital Tehran, on a mountain in Mazandaran province, Iran. International sanctions linked to the decade-long dispute over Iran's nuclear program have hindered the import of heavy machinery and modern technology in all sectors, and coal mining is no exception. In this Friday, January 7, 2011 photo, people carry baskets of coal scavenged illegally at an open-cast mine in the village of Bokapahari in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand where a community of coal scavengers live and work. The world's biggest coal users – China, the United States and India – have boosted coal mining in 2017, in an abrupt departure from last year's record global decline for the heavily polluting fuel and a setback to efforts to rein in climate change emissions.
