Fishermen stretch out an enormous net as they use an age-old technique to catch fish in turquoise waters on the Jamuna River in Bogra, Bangladesh on September 13, 2023. Algae in the water makes this river look turquoise. The traditional method of sinking the huge net is used to catch small fish such as barbs, catfish, and gourami. They spread the net in a vast area and then gently pull it up by its corners so they surround the fishes making them unable to escape. They catch between 8kg to 10kg of small fishes each time and can do this up to five times a day. Despite being a challenging task, it takes roughly an hour for each session. Their ancient technique not only preserves the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems but also ensures the continuity of their livelihoods. With each hour of laborious work, they not only reap a modest harvest but also contribute to the sustainable future of their community, demonstrating that the ancient rhythms of nature and responsible stewardship can coexist harmoniously. A worker covers mounds of rice with a giant hat-shaped bamboo cone in a field in Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh on September 21, 2023 after they have been dried in the scoring sun. This is a traditional method of keeping freshly collected rice protected from rain and fog after the removal of moisture. The dried rice is piled into cone-shaped mounds so that it fits under the cones. When paddy is harvested it contains 20-30% moisture and this moisture can destroy a whole crop of grains along with damage by pests. So, it's important that rice grain dries within 24 hours of being cut from the field. Firstly, Rice mill workers boil the golden paddy for 10 to 15 minutes at a temperature of 40 to 50 degrees centigrade and then, let it dry on the big ground but have to turn the paddy several times over a period of 3-4 days. After that, The final process comes; dried paddy is kept under giant hat-shaped bamboo cones. (Photo by Joy Saha/Rex Features/Shutterstock)

Rows of workers shelter under umbrellas from the scorching heat as they painstakingly sort through a red carpet of millions of chilli peppers in Bogra, Bangladesh on October 3, 2023. They sort the rotten and broken chilli peppers out to separate the poor quality ones which won't sell. In a line, the pickers who are paid less than £3 for a 10-hour shift slowly move forward with their baskets to separate the bad from the good after the chilies have been dried in the sun for a week. The dried & sorted chillies are then packaged and taken to the local market where they are brought mainly by companies to be made into chilli powder. The workers sort them in a warm environment, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C. More than 5,000 people work in almost 100 chilli farms in the Bogra district of Bangladesh to supply local spice companies with chillies for their recipes. Known as “Lal Morich” to the locals, chilli peppers are a major part of Bengali cuisine and are used as part of a combination of spices for various meat dishes, including chicken and beef. Bipul Ahmed, 23, said, “Although the lifespan of Aman paddy is 130 days, here they are cutting it 30-40 days early due to waterlogging of the land. Farmers will get about 50% less yield due to premature harvesting. Paddy land is usually dry. Instead, the farmers are using boats to collect the paddy field as it is submerged in water.
