The grey-headed swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus) is a very large colorful bluish-purple water bird with a red bill and forehead shield found from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent to southern China and northern Thailand. The tail is flicked up often, revealing fluffy white “underpants” and making short nasal grunts and croaking sounds. Found in inhabitants of marshy, vegetated freshwater bodies such as swamps, rivers, and lakes; usually in small groups, at muddy water edges, in reeds, and on floating vegetation.
