The first cygnets of the year have hatched at a famous swannery during the King's Coronation on May 8, 2023 – ushering in the start of summer. According to an ancient proverb, the spectacle of the first baby swan at historic Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset marks the first day of British summertime. The first of more than 100 nests has now started hatching a few days ahead of schedule. They will soon be joined by hundreds of cygnets that are due to arrive by the end of the month. A sloth hangs from a tree branch at the Sloth Sanctuary and Rescue Shelter in Cahuita, Limon Province, Costa Rica, on March 10, 2023. The fur of the Costa Rican sloth can produce antibiotics that keep at bay pathogens tha could make the tropical animal sick. Now, scientists wonder whether they could apply this to humans. Max Chavarria, a researcher at the University of Costa Rica, found in the notoriously lazy mammals' fur a unique mix of insects, fungi, algae and bacteria creating a delicately balanced biome that keeps sickness away. Hippos – descendants from a small herd introduced by drug kingpin Pablo Escobar – are seen in the wild in a lake near the Hacienda Napoles theme park, once the private zoo of Escobar, in Doradal, Antioquia Department, Colombia, on April 19, 2023. Colombia is making progress on the transfer of 70 hippos to overseas sanctuaries in Mexico and India, but mitigating the havoc caused by this unusual legacy of deceased drug lord Pablo Escobar carries a hefty price tag: $3.5 million. The cocaine baron brought a small number of the African beasts to Colombia in the late 1980s, but after his death in 1993 the animals were left to roam freely in a hot, marshy area of Antioquia department.
