Dhaka's Hazaribagh area, widely known for its tannery industry, produces 15 million sq. ft. of leather every year. Listed as one of the 10 most polluted places on earth, the area houses 270 registered tanneries with about 20,000 people working there. The tanneries collectively dump 22,000 cubic liters of toxic waste, including cancer-causing hexavalent chromium, into the Buriganga, Dhaka's main river and a key water supply on a daily basis. Inside the tanneries, many workers handle hide without any safety, often at risk by acidic water or similar chemicals which induce burns.
