Two Iberian pond turtles are seen at the Animal Recovery Center El Saler in Valencia, Spain, 27 November 2024. More than 120 Iberian pond turtles have been rescued following the floods in Valencia after they were carried away by the current from their original habitat, appearing in towns like Paiporta and Catarroja where, almost a month later, neighbors continue finding them buried in the mud. Floods triggered by the DANA (high-altitude isolated depression) weather phenomenon hit the east of the country on 29 October 2024, devastating Valencia and neighboring provinces and leaving at least 229 people dead. A mother and baby Chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) moves through a suburban neighbourhood of Da Game Park near Simon's Town outside of Cape Town on October 31, 2024. About 500 chacma baboons – among the largest monkey species and weighing up to 40 kg (88 pounds) – roam the peninsula south of Cape Town, says the South African National Biodiversity Institute. And as human development pushes up the mountain into their natural habitat, the animals are increasingly entering plush properties to forage in gardens and take the pickings from the bins. A Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) leaves with a seed in its beak at the feeding ground called “Smurfs' Village” for birds and squirrels built by Hungarian artist Tamas Kanya in Budakalasz, Hungary on November 23, 2024. Kanya uses organic materials only, like agaric, bark, honey-locust, willow twigs, horse chestnuts, duck stones, small pebbles, shells, and lots of driftwood. His previous creation was completely destroyed by the flood in autumn, so he had to start designing the feeding ground from scratch again. The feeding ground covers about 15 meters squared of forest area. It was completed within two weeks, but the artist is still working on the final form. (Photo by Attila Kisbenedek/AFP Photo)

Flop the Humboldt penguin in the baby bouncer on November 28, 2024. A baby penguin which developed a limp has found her waddle again after zookeepers nursed her back to health – using a homemade baby bouncer. Flop the Humboldt penguin was born at Dudley Zoo back in April but her mother passed away shortly after and her dad started to leave the nest for long periods. Zookeepers were forced to step in to hand rear the chick and moved her to a juvenile isolation area but noticed she then began developing a limp. Vets gave her anti-inflammatories and pain relief but less than 24 hours later the animal could no longer support her own weight. Blood tests revealed a reaction to an infection and she was given further medication. Flop started to lose her appetite and became withdrawn, sparking concern among staff that she may not survive. But keepers came with the ingenious idea of a baby bouncer to help keep her upright and also made a tailor-made treadmill by adapting a baby walker for her. (Photo by South West News Service)
