Local people enjoy the warm weather near the Black Sea shore in Sukhumi, the capital of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia, 02 March 2025 (issued 11 March 2025). Abkhazia, a breakaway territory of Georgia since 2008 and recognized by a limited number of countries, including Russia, relies on tourism as a key economic driver. Its Black Sea coastline, with its mild climate and Soviet-era sanatoriums, continues to attract primarily Russian tourists, despite aging infrastructure and remnants of past conflict. Vet staff tend to an injured koala that fell out of a tree on March 09, 2025 in Byron Bay, Australia. Australia's east coast is experiencing severe weather as ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves south. While downgraded from cyclone status, the weather system continues to bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding, particularly in the Gold Coast and northern NSW regions. Environmental charity Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital today reopened its doors to a flood of patients impacted by the destructive weather event. Working with local wildlife rescue groups, during the first few hours of re-opening native animal patients included an injured koala, an eastern grey kangaroo, a Flying fox, Sea Turtle hatchlings and a Swamp hen. Since 2020, the charity organisation operates a fully licensed veterinary hospital for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Reliant on donations, the hospital's service is free of charge.
