A family enjoying a makeshift beach that was used be a garbage dump near Manila bay on April 25, 2017 in Manila, Philippines. Metro Manila has been facing an increasing amount of floods due to overuse of groundwater causing the city to sink, as well as rapid rise in sea levels which has been over double the global average. The Philippines has been among the top five countries vulnerable to climate change over recent years while reports state coastal areas including parts of Manila are already below sea level causing further devastation during natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan which killed thousands of people and made millions homeless in 2013. In Manila, slum dwellers face an increasing amount of threat living along the coast as floods and storms have been exacerbated flooding while there is little the residents can do except relocate to higher ground. Johainah Nasrodeng, 5, writes in her notebook at a makeshift classroom for student evacuees at the Pantar Central Elementary School in Pantar, Lanao del Norte on the southern island of Mindanao on June 6, 2017. The schoolchildren, some 238 of them with their parents fled by foot for eight hours from Marawi City to Pantar municipality in a bid to escape heavy fighting. With bomb-proof tunnels, anti-tank weapons hidden in mosques, human shields and a “mastery” of the terrain, Islamist militants holed up in a southern Philippine city are proving a far tougher opponent than military chiefs expected.
