The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach were among more than two dozen ports that reopened Monday after a weekend shutdown by port operators. The move comes after ships were idle at 29 ports up and down the West Coast following the collapse of bitter contract negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) on Saturday. Although shipping operations were partially shut down, the PMA allowed for yard, rail and gate operations to continue throughout the weekend at the discretion of port operators. Robyn Boerstling with the National Association of Manufacturers told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO her group is losing patience with both sides. “Both parties really have to recognize that their inability to reach an agreement is really hurting our nation’s competitiveness”, said Boerstling. “It’s really time for them to step out of the fighting and think about the big picture for the good of the country”. While the PMA currently has no plans for another partial shutdown, officials haven’t ruled out additional shutdowns in the future.

The loading and unloading of cargo freighters has been suspended at all 29 U.S. West Coast ports this weekend because of chronic slowdowns on the docks that shippers and terminal operators have blamed on the dockworkers' union, the companies said Friday.
