The harvest of the famous Damask rose begins in the town of Kaldun al-Marrah, located in Al-Nabk, a district of Damascus, Syria on May 21, 2025. Registered in 2019 on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the Damask rose holds not only cultural and historical significance for the local people, but also economic value through the extraction of its essential oil used in perfume production. The harvested roses are soaked and then boiled for hours in large cauldrons to obtain the oil, which is primarily used in the production of high-quality perfumes, especially in France and other parts of Europe. In addition, rose water and various cosmetic products are also made from these roses. (Photo by Hasan Belal/Anadolu via Getty Images)
