Commuters stand on a nacelle suspended from the metal deck of an aerial ferry bridge to cross the Charente river in Rochefort, western France on May 22, 2025. Rochefort's aerial ferry bridge was inaugurated in 1900, allowing people to cross the river without disturbing maritime navigation to and from the city's dockyard. It was used as the main crossing way over the Charente river until 1967, and since 1994 carries pedestrians and cyclists, as the viaduct of the Charente estuary opened nearby in 1991. An aerial view of bicycle riders on dried up pond due to prolonged drought and extreme heat in Kocakent neighborhood of Mazidagi district in Mardin, Turkiye on July 04, 2025. With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the region, leaks at the bottom of the pond caused the water level to drop rapidly. Now entirely dried up, the pond once a fishing spot for both locals and visitors from nearby provinces has lost its function. Villagers stated that the pond had been both a source of livelihood and a social gathering place for years, expressing deep concern over the severe impact of the drought. This aerial view shows members of the Mehariste National Guard unit patrolling in the Hodh Ech Chargui region, on April 7, 2025. Heirs of units created under French colonisation, these desert cavalrymen have regained a central role in the security strategy of this predominantly desert West African country. To tame the vast territory that shares 2200km of often porous and poorly defined borders with Mali plagued by a jihadist insurgency, Mauritania has relied on the slow pace of the dromedary where even 4x4s get stuck. The unit was declining a few years ago with only about fifty men due to lack of resources, but since 2019 it has experienced a true revival supported by European Union funding of several million euros. Today, the Nomadic Group consists of about 150 men and a herd of 400 dromedaries. Mauritania has not experienced a jihadist attack since 2011 whereas its neighbour Mali has been mired in conflict for over a decade. (Photo by Patrick Meinhardt/AFP Photo)
