Macaque monkeys crowd together in their cage at a monkey farm on February 3, 2016 in Xinye county, Henan province, China. The area boasts a centuries-long and lucrative history of raising and training monkeys for performance. In Xinye, villagers are seeing an increase in business with the lunar calendar's “Year of the Monkey”. Farmers say most of the monkeys are bred and raised for domestic zoos, circuses, and performing groups, but add that some are also sold for medical research in China and the United States. Despite the popularity of the tradition, critics contend the training methods and conditions constitute animal cruelty. (Photo by Kevin Frayer/Getty Images)

Thousands of bats group together during hibernation in an artificial cave on Shikoku Island taken in January, 2016 in Kochi, Japan. The incredible images, taken by university researcher Kei Nomiyama, show a colony of eastern bent-winged bats hibernating in a man-made cave. Also known as Little Japanese Horseshoe Bats, for several years the complete disappearance of the animals during the winter season baffled researchers as environmentalists could not locate their winter hideout. After much research, this massive colony of around 4,000 bats were found hiding in the mountain on Shikoku Island – the smallest of the four main islands of Japan. Mother Raquel said she contracted Zika during her pregnancy. As many of the babies born with microcephaly, believed to be linked to the Zika virus, approach or have turned one year old in the region, doctors and mothers are adapting and learning treatments to assist and calm the children. Many suffer a plethora of difficulties including vision and hearing problems with doctors now labeling the overall condition as “congenital Zika syndrome”. Authorities have recorded thousands of cases in Brazil in which the mosquito-borne Zika virus may have led to microcephaly in infants. The team explored the peculiar landscape by foot as well as freediving, taken in February 2016, Antarctica. A group of UK adventurers have made history as the first Brits believed to have freedived in Antarctica. Will Glendinning, 40, made the treacherous journey to the planet's most southerly continent with friend Dave Crump and four other crew members. Freediving involves going underwater without breathing equipment and relies on the diver's ability to hold their breath for minutes at a time. Classed as an extreme sport, it is especially dangerous in the Southern Ocean, with icebergs “the size of small countries” threatening to collapse and crush divers beneath their weight. The fireflies typically light up at evening, and they can control their light by flashing it in patterns – saving energy and communicating with each other, Japan, June 2016. Thousands of dancing fireflies in Japan create an enchanted forest. Photographer Kei Nomiyama, 37, has visited the Japanese island Shikoku every year since 2012 to capture the mesmerising images of thousands of fireflies glowing in the forest. Fireflies produce a “cold light” from their bodies, which is a chemically produced light that can shine bright yellow, green, or red. The light is created due to a type of chemical reaction called “bioluminescence”, and was originally believed to be used for warning purposes, but now its main purpose is thought to be used in mate selection. Newly displaced Iraqi's who fled from the city of Mosul, Iraq's last major Islamic State (IS) group stronghold, are reunited with their relatives who came two years ago to the refugee camp in the Khazir area, near near the Kurdish checkpoint of Aksi Kalak, some 40 kilometres east of Arbil following their arrival on October 26, 2016. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Stephane Dujarric told reporters that almost 9,000 people are internally displaced as a result of the Mosul military operation in Iraq. Lise Grande, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, said the military operations to retake Mosul could spark the largest humanitarian crisis in 2016 as the security situation in the area restrains aid agencies' ability to deliver help.
