At least six people were killed and eight remain missing in the Philippines following the passage of Typhoon Nock-Ten, which left a trail of destruction in the central part of the archipelago, according to local media. Authorities in the eastern provinces of Albay and Catanduanes have declared a state of emergency, a measure that allows immediate disbursements of money to deal with the catastrophe. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, which coordinates the response and issues periodic bulletins on the situation, has reported that 383,087 people have been evacuated and directly 72,869 affected. Nock-Ten is the third typhoon in the country's recent history that struck during the Christmas holiday season, after Lee in 1981 and Jean in 1947, both Category 2 storms. (Photo by Francis R.
