Equine intern Emma Saric monitors and supports a horse suffering from what is known as Kissing Spines, where sections of bone attached to the vertebrae are too close together and impinge on each other, as it undergoes standing surgery to rectify the problem at the Hambleton Equine Clinic on February 15, 2018 in Stokesley, England. Standing surgery allows many surgical procedures to be performed under anaesthesia with the horse standing, which is much safer for the horse. The standing surgery theatre is air-conditioned to maximise the comfot of the horse and the horse is secured in a specially designed set of stocks to help restrain the horse safely. The facility is the only purpose built equine clinic in North Yorkshire and provides a full range of equine services to the professional and recreational horse owner. Hospital facilities include in-patient care, surgery, ophthalmology services, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, nuclear scintigraphy and MRI scanning. The state-of-the-art hospital was opened in 2016 and currently has six vets and a large number of staff providing equine care. (Photo by Ian Forsyth/Getty Images)
