The newly identified prehistoric marine reptile Dearcmhara shawcrossi, a member of a group called ichthyosaurs that swam the world's oceans at the same time that dinosaurs ruled the land, is depicted in this handout illustration provided by Todd Marshall. Scientists have announced the discovery of the fossil remains of the dolphin-like seagoing reptile on Scotland's Isle of Skye that lived about 170 million years ago and was about 14 feet (4.3 meters) long. Ichthyosaurs, some of which reached monstrous proportions rivaling all but the largest of today's whales, thrived for more than 150 million years until disappearing about 95 million years ago. Dearcmhara, a moderate-sized ichthyosaur, swam in warm, shallow seas during the Jurassic Period, eating fish and squid. Its remains are incomplete but the shape of a bone in its front flippers suggests it may have been an especially strong or fast swimmer, the researchers said. (Photo by Todd Marshall/Reuters)

Children streamed back to school across Pakistan on Monday in an anxious start to a new term following last month's massacre of 134 students at an army-run school in the volatile northwestern city of Peshawar. Most schools across the country of 180 million had been shut until Monday for an extended winter break in the aftermath of the Dec. 16 attack when Taliban militants broke into Army Public School and methodically killed the children. A Zimbabwean girl prepares food besides burnt and demolished makeshift shelters at Manzou Farm in Mazowe, January 8, 2015. About 200 families are facing eviction from a farm near Harare after the government stated that the land was earmarked for a game park and was declared a national heritage. But critics say the villagers – who have occupied the land since 2001 at the height of invasion of white-owned commercial farms by President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF supporters – are being forced out to make more space for the president's wife, Grace, who already owns the adjacent land. The villagers have been granted a court order stopping the evictions. (Photo by Philimon Bulawayo/Reuters)

Australian Peter Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed were sentenced in June to seven to 10 years in jail for spreading lies to help a “terrorist organization” – a reference to Egypt's outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
