The wax moulding of patients was a popular method of preserving the condition of the patient for study and identification for medical students and other doctors. The practice being a popular educational tool for medical students in Europe, Thomas Mütter brought examples home from France in the 1800's, and which still remain in the museum. After two years of controversy over how to ethically exhibit human remains, the Mutter Museum announced last week it is changing its policy and will from now on work to "contextualize" and de-anonymize its collection while accepting new donations only from live donors or from their descendants.
