A view of Mount Etna seen from Adrano, Catania, which is producing a new eruption on 14 February 2025. A lava flow emerged from a fissure at about 3,000 metres on the southern rim of the Bocca Nuova crater. It descended along the southwest flank of the volcano, reaching an altitude of about 1,950 metres above sea level near the Galvarina shelter. The flow came within 200 metres of the Altomontana slope, where a large crowd of tourists had gathered to witness the spectacular event. (Photo by Salvatore Allegra/Anadolu via Getty Images)

Mount Etna's eruptive activity has resumed after a brief period of apparent calm, lasting just over 48 hours, beginning on the evening of Feb. 22, in Biancavilla near Catania, Italy on February 24, 2025. A fracture located at approximately 3,000 meters above sea level, at the base of the Bocca Nuova crater, has once again started feeding a vigorous lava flow that is slowly advancing along the volcano's southwestern flank. This new flow partially overlaps with the previous one, which had been descending the volcano's slopes since February 8, 2025, cutting across the high-altitude trail and reaching an elevation of about 1,850 meters near the Galvarina refuge. Meanwhile, signs of renewed activity have also emerged at the Southeast Crater, where mild Strombolian explosive activity reactivated in the late afternoon of February 23, 2025. Mount Etna erupts again with intense Strombolian activity concentrated in the area of the Southeast crater near Catania, Italy on May 13, 2025. The event was characterized by frequent Strombolian explosions, from several vents within the crater, with two flows escaping from the Southeast crater one heading south the other eastward, the column of gas and ash propagated in a southeast direction falling back on wind-exposed villages. Strong rumblings generated by the explosions were heard as far away as Catania. The airborne alert that rose to red in the late evening of May 12 subsided just before dawn on May 13. This is the 15th paroxysm from the southeast crater during this year, the second in May 2025. (Photo by Salvatore Allegra/Anadolu via Getty Images)
