Members of French and German historical associations, who gather annually, together visited the battlefield of Verdun in France, the site of a bloody World War One battle that dragged on for around 10 months in 1916, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and destroying many villages. Wearing historical uniforms, they attended a ceremony in the village of Bezonvaux, which was wiped out in the fighting, and took part in a 15-km (9-mile) walk through the forest of Verdun. The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War (WWI). (Photo by Charles Platiau/Reuters)
