Firemen rescue a baby from a collapsed building in Tainan City, Taiwan, 06 February 2016, following a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the area. At least three people, including an infant, were killed and 45 injured when several buildings, including a 17-storey building, collapsed after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early 06 February, authorities said. The 17-storey building in the city of Tainan was said to be home to some 200 people in 60 households, state-run media reported. Lai Ching-te, mayor of Tainan, which has a population of 2 million, confirmed the two deaths. A number of other buildings in Tainan also collapsed or were damaged in the wake of the tremor that struck the Meinung District of Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan at 03:57 am local time (19:57 GMT Friday). There were several aftershocks in southern Taiwan. The total number of victims remained unclear. Emergency crews worked in the darkness to rescue those still trapped in rubble. The effects of the earthquake were felt throughout the island when most of its inhabitants were asleep. President Ma Ying-jeou flew to Tainan to hold an emergency meeting on rescue coordination.
