An Israeli woman scrambles through the mud and under barbed wire at the competition of the Legion Run in the Menara Cliffs area of Kiryat Shmona, in northern Israel, near the Lebanon border 14 October 2016. Hundreds of participants ran five kilometers cross country in steep terrain and then navigated various obstacle courses including steep inclines and mud holes. It is the first time this non-competitive but supportive sporting event is held in Israel. (Photo by Jim Hollander/EPA)

Soma-Nomaoi is a festival that recreates a battle scene from more than 1,000 years ago. It is annually held for 4 days from July 22 to 25 in Haramachi City, Fukushima Prefecture, in the eastern part of Japan. In this historical event, 600 mounted samurai in traditional Japanese armor, with long swords at their side and ancestral flagstaffs streaming from their backs, ride across open fields. Soma-Nomaoi has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

Fresh fighting broke out in the strife-torn Central African Republic on the eve of an announcement on Sunday of the candidates seeking to become the new interim president. Sectarian violence has gripped the landlocked country after a March 2013 coup launched by the mostly Muslim Seleka rebels, and the UN has warned that the bloodshed could turn into genocide.
