A goose sits atop eggs in a flower bed on the Wisconsin Ave. bridge, Friday, April 19, 2013, feathers ruffled in the cold blowing wind and snowflakes. The goose is near to the statues dedicated to Gertie the duck who made international news when she built her nest next to the same bridge in 1945 and captured the attention of Milwaukee at the end of the war. The Wildscreen festival is the world’s biggest celebration of screen-based natural history storytelling which takes place every two years in Bristol. Here: “Walrus in Midnight Sun”. Walrus feed mostly on bivalves in productive, shallow and often sandy habitats in the Arctic. This individual, though, arrived on a beach outside Tromsø, northern Norway, and found comfort on a stranded dead sperm whale. After two weeks he approached Audun, and only half a metre away he stretched his tusk forward and touched his hand gently. “This was one of the most memorable moments of my life”, Rikardsen says. The series of shots show the bare steel infrastructure of the Bushfield army training camp near Winchester which was in operation during World War Two and was used to train Royal Green Jackets recruits in the sixties. The spectacular images were taken by an urban explorer who wished to remain anonymous.
