As Russia puts the finishing touches to the carefully manicured fields that will host the World Cup from next week, people around the globe are playing soccer on a surprising variety of makeshift pitches. Off the coast of an island in southern Thailand, they play on a floating platform; in the mountains of northern Italy, they kick about in the snow – images captured by Reuters photographers around the world. Kha Tu Ngoc rests in her two- square- meter house in Ho Chi Minh City on May 2, 2018. The “micro- house” dwellings are dotted throughout Vietnam' s bustling southern hub, occupied by families clinging to postage stamp- sized plots a city developing at breakneck pace. Tucked away in winding alleys, nestled under new condo developments or sandwiched between street food stalls and shops, the tiny houses are easily missed by the unattentive passerby. These fascinating photographs offer a colorful glimpse into the history of New York City’s parks, after nearly 3,000 slides were discovered while an official was cleaning out an office. Forty years ago, New York City’s newspapers went on strike for nearly three months. Parks Commissioner Gordon Davis hired eight temporarily out-of-work New York Times photographers to document the city’s parks. Here: Family salvages picnic table, unidentified Park, 1978.
