Newly admitted drug addicts wait for registration at a rehabilitation center in Kabul, Afghanistan, 31 January 2023. Some 3,000 drug addicts have been rounded up by the Taliban recently from the famous Pol Sokta bridge, which is a renowned gathering area for drug addicts, and transferred them to a rehabilitation center in Kabul. A typical treatment plan for drug addicts lasts 45 days; however, in some cases, a longer treatment plan such as 90 days may be required, depending on the patient's condition and progress. A rehabilitation center with a capacity of 1,000 beds is currently operating over capacity due to the large number of addicts rounded up by the Taliban this year. Because of a lack of funding, the rehabilitation center does not have enough clothing and food to offer its patients. Over the course of one year, at least 13,000 drug addicts were collected from Kabul and treated in drug addiction treatment centers according to Khaled Zadran, the Taliban Police spokesman. There have been approximately 88 centers for the treatment of drug addicts throughout Afghanistan, however a lack of funding and lack of support has resulted in a reduction in the number to less than 50 percent of what it once was.
