Afghan girls look on during a work day at a brick kiln in Deh Sabz district, northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan, 23 October 2024. A recent report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) reveals that Afghanistan has approximately five million more children living in poverty than adults, with children constituting 58.9 percent of the country's poor population. The report indicates that 15.5 million children and 10 million adults are affected by 'multidimensional' poverty, leading many children to work due to their families' economic struggles. Additionally, the 2024 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) highlights that 1.1 billion people worldwide live in extreme poverty, with over half being under 18 years old. In Afghanistan, nearly 85 percent of the population survives on less than 1 US dollar a day, while over 23.7 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance this year, according to UNDP and UNICEF.
