Afghan women work at a carpet loom at a home in Kandahar, Afghanistan, 14 February 2024. Zainab, a resident of Kandahar city, has established a carpet weaving center in her small rural house to support her family's economic needs. Over the past 20 years, she has trained several other impoverished women and provided them with employment opportunities. However, due to limited resources and a lack of sufficient opportunities in the industry, Zainab and the women working in the center are facing severe challenges. They are struggling with poverty, low wages, and a decline in the market for carpets. They call for support from the government and institutions to help overcome these difficulties and revive the industry. (Photo by Qudratullah Rizwan/EPA)

This photograph taken on March 8, 2024 shows Afghan riders of the Yama Petroleum (orange) and Baghlan teams competing at the Buzkashi league tournament final in Mazar-i- Sharif. Played for centuries in Afghanistan's northern steppes, the national sport at the heart of Afghan identity has evolved from a rough, rural pastime to a professionalised phenomenon flush with cash. Traditionally, buzkashi is played with the headless body of a goat. More often a 30-kilogramme (66-pound) leather sack stands in for the carcass that riders try to pull from a fray of horses and drop in a “circle of justice” traced on the ground.
