Taiwan honor guards march during the Presidential inauguration of Tsai Ing-wen, in Taipei, Taiwan, 20 May 2016. Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took office on 20 May 2016 as Taiwan's first female leader, and also the first president from the former opposition with a parliamentary majority, under China's watchful gaze. Tsai's arrival in power and the resounding defeat of the Kuomintang Party, which along with the presidency also lost its majority in parliament for the first time in 67 years in January, heralds significant political changes on the island, especially with regards to foreign policy.
