Visitors view “Spot”, a quadruped robot developped by Boston Robotics, as it is displayed on June 9, 2022 during a presentation to the media at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, near Naples, southern Italy. Spot is one the latest monitoring operations of the archaeological structures, capable of inspecting the smallest of spaces in complete safety, gathering and recording data useful for the study and planning of interventions, to improve both the quality of monitoring of the existing areas, and to further our knowledge of the state of progress of the works in those areas undergoing recovery or restoration, and thereby to manage the safety of the site, as well as that of workers. A British police officer stands guard on the beach of Dungeness, on the southeast coast of England, on June 15, 2022, as Royal National Lifeboat Institution's (RNLI) members of staff help migrants to disembark from one of their lifeboat after they were picked up at sea while attempting to cross the English Channel. Furious Conservatives called on Britain's government on June 15, 2022 to abandon a European human rights pact after a judge dramatically blocked its plan to fly asylum-seekers to Rwanda. Under the UK's agreement with Rwanda, all migrants arriving illegally in Britain are liable to be sent to the East African nation thousands of miles away for processing and settlement. The government, after arguing that Brexit would lead to tighter borders, says the plan is needed to deter record numbers of migrants from making the perilous Channel crossing from northern France. Alpinists hiking on the receding Rhone glacier walk past a portion at the very bottom of the glacier that is covered in reflective tarp on June 20, 2022 near Gletsch, Switzerland. The tarps, which are designed to reflect away the sun’s rays and reduce melting, cover a hewn ice grotto that is an annual tourist attraction. This summer is likely to be especially brutal for Switzerland’s glaciers. Normally in mid-June, the glaciers would still be covered in snow that protects them from the sun, though because very little snow fell this year, the glaciers are already exposed and melting rapidly under conditions that are more typical for late July or August. Matthias Huss, a glaciologist with ETH Zurich university and head of the Swiss glacier monitoring network, and his colleagues are studying approximately 20 glaciers, including the Rhone glacier, across Switzerland to observe the effects of global warming. All of the glaciers are melting, and he predicts that if we do not meet global climate goals Switzerland’s glaciers will be mostly gone by 2100. The Rhone glacier has lost an average of five meters per year in vertical thickness over the last ten years. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
