Record snowfall in the Sahara Desert near the town of Ain Sefra in Algeria on January 21, 2017. More photos have emerged after the Sahara Desert had its biggest snowfall in living memory – just days after 2016 was found to be the world's warmest year ever. Photographers have taken incredible pictures of one metre deep snow covering the sand in the small Saharan desert town of Ain Sefra in Algeria. The town saw a sprinkling of snow just before Christmas, when a few flakes settled on the red sand dunes of the world's hottest desert for the first time in 37 years. But on Friday it snowed steadily from the early hours of the morning until 5pm. It meant that by lunchtime the snow was waist deep in some parts of Ain Sefra, which is known as “The Gateway to the Desert”. (Photo by Geoff Robinson/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
