Stunning images capture a Royal Air Force fighter jet developing a vapor cone as it travels as incredible speed in the last decade of July 2023. The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning, operated from the HMS Queen Elizabeth as part of their Aviation Integration Period, created the visible cloud which is the result of condensed water forming around the surfaces of an object travelling at transonic speeds. It is often thought to be a result of the aircraft travelling at speeds greater than the speed of sound, but these cones actually form as a result of different regions around the aircraft creating airflow that travels at either subsonic or supersonic speeds. Something that adds to the affect is the aircrafts height, lower down air is denser, creates more drag which lends itself well to the creation of these cones.
