On August 17, 2024, a froghopper was observed sitting on the edge of a leaf in a forest at Tehatta, West Bengal, India. Froghoppers, or the superfamily Cercopoidea, are a group of hemipteran insects in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha. Adults are capable of jumping many times their height and length, which gives the group their common name. However, many species are best known for their plant-sucking nymphs, which produce foam shelters and are commonly referred to as “spittlebugs”. These nymphs produce a covering of foamed-up plant sap that visually resembles saliva; as a result, they are commonly known as spittlebugs, and their foam is often called cuckoo spit, frog spit, or snake spit. This characteristic spittle production is associated with the unusual trait of xylem feeding. A few species are significant agricultural pests. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

A female Ditch Jewel dragonfly was observed sitting on the leaf of a chili plant in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 31 March 2024. Brachythemis contaminata, also known as the Ditch Jewel, is a dragonfly species in the Libellulidae family found in many Asian countries. It is also known by the common names Asian Groundling, Asian Amberwing, Orange Skimmer, and Common Amberwing. This small dragonfly features brown-capped, yellowish-green eyes. Its thorax is olivaceous-brown, marked with a reddish-brown humeral stripe and two brownish stripes on each side. The wings are transparent but have a broad, bright orange fascia extending from the base to within 2 to 3 cells of the reddish pterostigma. The abdomen is ochreous-red, marked with dorsal and sub-dorsal brown stripes, and the anal appendages are reddish-brown. The female is similar to the male but in a pale yellowish-green color. The wings are transparent, tinted with yellow at the extreme base, but lack the bright orange fascia seen in the male. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto/Rex Features/Shutterstock)

A European Mantis is seen on a tree branch in Bursa, Turkiye on August 30, 2023. As of August, the mantis exhibit heightened activity in their search for partners. An exceptional characteristic of mantis is that females attack and cannibalize the males. They also hunt a range of animals including reptiles and insects, therefore, very helpful for agriculture as they can act as an effective form of organic pest control. As locusts by the billions descend on parts of Kenya in the worst outbreak in 70 years, small planes are flying low over affected areas to spray pesticides in what experts call the only effective control.
