In this photo taken on March 10, 2019, 13-year-old Reymark Cavesirano paddles his borrowed makeshift craft made from styrofoam to fishing boats anchored at the mouth of Manila Bay off Navotas City in suburban Manila. Cavesirano, a grade five student, paddles to the anchored fishing boats and helps crew clean their nets, and in exchange collects leftover herring still tangled in the nets. After spending three hours in different boats he heads back to land and divides the catch up for his family's consumption with the rest sold to neighbours, earning around 100-150 pesos (2-3 USD) which he saves to support his school expenses. His grandmother, Remedios Santos, has said she is against him doing this work, because of the risks he faces on the water. “I told him it is dangerous”, says Santos. But he said: “Mama, other people won’t help us in life. So I will help you”. Santos, who is 55, still works as a scavenger. (Photo by Ted Aljibe/AFP Photo)

Before dawn on March 10, 2019, Reymark carries his borrowed raft to the water as he prepares for another day of paddling out to the boats at anchor at the mouth of Manila Bay off Navotas City in suburban Manila. Across the Philippines, there are 5 million child labourers, aged between five and 17, many of them working in dangerous conditions. About 22 million people – a fifth of the population – live below the national poverty line. (Photo by Ted Aljibe/AFP Photo)
