South Africa's Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa kisses a replica of the skull of a newly discovered ancient species, named “Homo naledi”, during its unveiling outside Johannesburg September 10, 2015. Humanity's claim to uniqueness just suffered another setback: scientists reported on Thursday that the newly discovered ancient species related to humans also appeared to bury its dead. Fossils of the creature were unearthed in a deep cave near the famed sites of Sterkfontein and Swartkrans, treasure troves 50 km (30 miles) northwest of Johannesburg that have yielded pieces of the puzzle of human evolution for decades. The new species has been named 'Homo naledi', in honour of the “Rising Star” cave where it was found. Naledi means “star” in South Africa's Sesotho language. (Photo by Siphiwe Sibeko/Reuters)

The granite head was part of a 19-meter (62-foot) Lenin figure unveiled in 1970 on East Berlin's Leninplatz, or Lenin Square. After German reunification the statue was removed, broken into 129 pieces and buried in woods on the city's southeastern edge. (Photo by Gregor Fischer/DPA via AP Photo)

University of Washington researchers are testing an earthquake alert system as the Pacific Northwest prepares for the day when a 600-mile-long fault line looming off the coast unleashes a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. The fault line hasn't produced a major quake since 1700, but seismologists say one could happen in our lifetimes. Fears of such a quake – heightened after the devastating 2011 Japanese temblor – have fueled the development of the computer alert system that officials hope will save lives and protect critical infrastructure by giving a precious heads-up to get ready. The alerts are now going to companies such as Boeing and Microsoft as well as hospitals, utilities and emergency management agencies in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, who are beginning to think about how they would respond. Russia has been sending military forces into Syria in recent days, Israel's defense chief announced Thursday, as Moscow hinted at broader action to bolster President Bashar Assad's embattled army following a string of battlefield losses. The increased Russian activity in Syria reflects Moscow's deep concerns that its longtime ally is on the brink of collapse, as well as hopes by President Vladimir Putin that a common battle against Islamic State extremists can improve Russia's ties with the West, strained over Ukraine. But the strategy could be risky – and unless Russia sends large numbers of troops, halting the territorial gains made by Islamic militants could prove tough. Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon told reporters Thursday that the Russian buildup appears to be limited for the time being. He said military advisers, technicians and security guards have arrived in recent days, with the main goal of setting up an air base near the coastal town of Latakia that could be used to stage strikes on Islamic State fighters.
