Urban Light, favorite place for portraits of wedding photographers, is a 2008 large-scale assemblage sculpture by Chris Burden. The installation consists of 202 restored street lamps from the 1920s and 1930s. Most of them once lit the streets of Southern California. The cast iron street lamps are of 17 styles, which vary depending on the municipality that commissioned them. They range from about 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 meters), are painted a uniform grey and placed, forest-like, in a near grid. The lights are solar powered and switched on at dusk. Two boys among thousands of Shembe men, members of the Shembe Church (Nazareth Baptist Church), a traditionalist Zulu church, clad in leopard-skin dance during a ceremony to worship God on January 26, 2014 in Durban. Leopard skins symbolise pride and royalty to the Nazareth Baptist Church, whose members are encouraged to don the costly dress for customary rituals. But as lost habitat and poaching send the cats' numbers plummeting, church leaders have agreed with conservationists to offer a cheaper, kitty-friendly synthetic alternative. “The leopard skin has got a significance, because it shows power”, said church spokesman Lizwi Ncwane, adding that “We also see the importance of the conservation of the cat. For the past four months now, we have been using fake skins, because we are trying to bring awareness among our people”, Ncwane told AFP. The movement, more commonly known as the Shembe Church, was founded by religious leader Isaiah Shembe a century ago and joins Christianity with Zulu customs. (Photo by Alexander Joe/AFP Photo)

The mystery of how Cassiopeia A exploded is unraveling thanks to new data from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR. In this NASA image obtained February 19, 2014, NuSTAR data, which shows high-energy X-rays from radioactive material, are colored blue. Lower-energy X-rays from non-radioactive material, imaged previously with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, are shown in red, yellow and green. The new view shows a more complete picture of Cassiopeia A, the remains of a star that blew up in a supernova event whose light reached Earth about 350 years ago, when it could have appeared to observers as a star that suddenly brightened. The remnant is located 11,000 light-years away from Earth. NuSTAR is the first telescope capable of taking detailed pictures of the radioactive material in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. While other telescopes have detected radioactivity in these objects before, NuSTAR is the first capable of pinpointing the location of the radioactivity, creating maps.
