Ivan Timofeenko, co-founder of “Newton Park”, a private interactive museum of science, dumps a bucket of cold liquid nitrogen on himself during a flash mob at the Krasnoyarsk Museum Centre in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, November 20, 2014. Timofeenko and several other enthusiasts poured cold liquid nitrogen on themselves, bearing the temperature of about minus 196 degrees Celsius (minus 320.8 degrees Fahrenheit), while taking part in an event resembling the popular "Ice Bucket Challenge" project and aimed at the popularization of natural sciences among children and teenagers. The experiment demonstrated the Leidenfrost effect phenomenon, in which a liquid produces a layer of insulating vapour that prevents the liquid getting into a direct contact with a surface much hotter than the liquid's boiling point, according to organizers. U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships steam in formation during their military manoeuvre exercise known as Keen Sword 15 in the sea south of Japan, in this November 19, 2014 handout provided by the U.S. Navy. Japan stepped up its role in large-scale war games with the U.S. this week, with one of its admirals commanding air and sea manoeuvres that the U.S. military described as the most complex ever overseen by the Japanese navy. The Keen Sword exercises involving more than 30,000 Japanese troops and 11,000 U.S. personnel come as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe seeks a higher profile for Japan in the security alliance. French soldiers from Operation Barkhane patrol in Timbuktu, November 5, 2014. If the French army and its allies are to keep al Qaeda at bay in the desert of northern Mali they must stop them seizing the biggest prizes in the sea of white sand – the wells. So this month a column of soldiers from France, Burkina Faso and Mali, in armoured vehicles and pick-up trucks, churned toward a village north of Timbuktu where herders water camels and goats. They were looking for signs of infiltration by militants who need water as much as the locals do and aim to convert villages to their ideology. (Photo by Joe Penney/Reuters)
