Thailand's capital for 417 years, the ancient city of Ayutthaya lies 76 kilometers north of Bangkok. It was King U-Thong who founded Ayutthaya in 1350, and it is today one of the country's major tourist attractions. Ancient temple ruins and works of art can be found in Ayutthaya. Throughout its time as capital, Ayutthaya was home to 33 kings from different dynasties ruling the Thai kingdom until the Burmese army sacked it in 1767.
