A fireworks factory worker placing the wicks into gunpowder filled paper tubes at a factory in Kimbulapitiya, 47 kms from Colombo, Sri Lanka, 09 April 2016. Sri Lankans light firecrackers and fireworks on important occasionssuch as New Year, Christmas, weddings. Villagers also use fire crackers to drive away wild animals. Being almost a cottage industry, fireworks follow the least safety or health precautions. Currently, with the Sri Lankan Rupee depreciating against the US dollar, the prices of the imported components too have risen considerably, resulting in the consumers paying more for their fireworks for the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year, where firecrackers are lit to celebrate the occassion.
