The city of Meroë laid undiscovered for two millennia before British archaeologist John Garstang excavated it in the early 20th century. Garstang took the radical decision to document his discoveries with photography – and immortalised an ancient world. “Meroë: Africa’s Forgotten Empire” is being shown until 14 September at Garstang Museum of Archaeology, Liverpool. From a distance, the cemetery in the eastern Serbian village of Smoljinac looks like a residential neighbourhood eerily placed among graves. But once inside the grounds, after passing a section with the usual stone slabs, visitors find rows of small bungalows painted in pastel colours. They have one or two rooms, large windows and ornate plaques – some inside, some outside – memorialising the deceased. Bra-clad Uber passenger was caught on camera stealing from a driver’s tip jar, while brazenly looking into the car’s security camera in New York City, USA in August (issued November 7, 2017). The unnamed rider was with two others. When they got out she looked around as she grabbed dollars out of the jar. The driver then looked down after the three got out, but it was too late.
