Educative Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making the former an island. The builders dug the canal through the Isthmus at sea level; no locks are employed. It is 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) in length and only 21.3 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it unpassable for most modern ships. It now has little economic importance.

Touching 2016 Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year Competition

Some of the best entries so far in the 2016 Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. There are two weeks left to enter, and the winners will be announced in September. Here: Aurora over Laksvatn Fjord, Laksvatn, Norway. The aurora borealis dances in the skies over the town of Laksvatn, with the Milky Way to the left. The image is a single shot with no compositing, only post-processing to bring out the aurora, and some colour corrections. The photographer Matt Walford said: “I love the way the northern lights look like they are just wistfully dancing over the fjord, framed by the mountains on either side”. Wow Parkour in Motion by Ben Franke

New York-based photographer and videographer Ben Franke captures the beautiful, acrobatic movement of parkour. The photographer followed New York City free runners, known as tracers, for a few years, documenting their athletic prowess as they freely roamed about the urban streets with a zest for life. Finally, he decided to take his personal project to the next level by producing a collection of dramatically captivating portraits of these athletes for his series titled Parkour Motion.

Wow Vocklabruck Platform in the Middle of a Lake

There's a wonderfully picturesque spot in Vöcklabruck, Austria where visitors are able to sit in the middle of a pond without getting wet. The scenic landscape includes a path leading down to a hollowed out circular area where people can take a seat and relax amongst nature. It's a surreal journey along the gradual ramp to the observational platform as the water level gains height either side. Once in the resting area, depending on perspective, visitors seem like they're wading in the lake without a drop of water on them.

Fact Northern Sea Route – First Container Ship!

An important historic event: For the first time a container ship sailed the Northern Sea Route through the Russian Arctic, traveling from China to Amsterdam. The journey, which began on August 15 and was completed on September 10, is only now possible due to high levels of Arctic sea ice melt that have occurred in the past several years.

Educative Kaindy Lake in Kazakhstan

Kaindy Lake (Kazakh: Қайыңды көлі, Qayındı köli) is a 400 metre long lake in Kazakhstan that reaches depths near 30 metres in some areas. It is located 129 km ESE of the city of Almaty and is 2,000 metres above sea level. It was created by the result of an enormous limestone landslide, triggered by the 1911 Kebin earthquake. The track to Kaindy lake has many scenic views to the Saty Gorge, the Chilik River valley and the Kaindy Gorge. Dried-out trunks of submerged Picea schrenkiana trees rise above the surface.
