Young Sahrawi troops man new desert posts for the Polisario Front, which for more than 40 years has sought independence for the vast desert region - first in a guerrilla war against Morocco and then politically since a ceasefire deal in 1991. Now a standoff with Morocco, which controls the majority of Western Sahara, is renewing pressure for a diplomatic solution to ensure foot soldiers don't return to fighting as the last generation of commanders once did. The standoff since August has brought Moroccan and Polisario forces within 200 metres of each other in a narrow strip of land near the Mauritanian border. Rich in phosphate, Western Sahara has been contested since 1975 when Spanish colonial powers left. Morocco claimed the territory and fought the 16-year war with Polisario. I hiked out to these ruins at night hoping to photograph them with the Milky Way, but instead a thunderstorm rolled through, creating this dramatic image. – Max Seigal. National Geographic Traveler Director of Photography Dan Westergren, one of this year's judges, shares his thoughts on the second place winner: “This photo combines two different scenes into one: the small kiva in a cliff dwelling and the grand vista of Canyonlands National Park across the valley. I really like the two different color palettes – warm inside and purple outside. This two-for-one scene was caused by the lightning storm outside the dwelling, which lit up the landscape like it was a huge electronic flash. Looking at this picture I can imagine what a wonderful sight it must have been for the ancient people who lived here. It doesn't seem too amazing now in our modern world, but might have been mind-blowing for the prehistoric residents”. Location: Utah. The proliferation of marijuana edibles for both medical and recreational purposes is giving rise to a cottage industry of baked goods, candies, infused oils, cookbooks and classes that promises a slow burn as more states legalize the practice and awareness spreads about the best ways to deliver the drug. Edibles and infused products such as snack bars, olive oils and tinctures popular with medical marijuana users have flourished into a gourmet market of chocolate truffles, whoopie pies and hard candies as Colorado and Washington legalized the recreational use of marijuana in the past year. I was covering the controlled burn of a house slowly falling into Lake Whitney due to the decaying cliff underneath. Asked to take photos from an aerial perspective, an instructor and I took off from Grand Prairie Municipal Airport around 9am. The burn, scheduled to start an hour later, was delayed. I love flying, but patience proved challenging as circling for nearly three hours gets boring fast. Once the fire started we only had 15 minutes to take photos because the plane was booked at 1pm. The owners invested their retirement savings in the house and were even advised by geologists that the ground was stable. To watch your investment literally go up in flames must take its toll emotionally. The owners said they don't expect their insurance to cover the loss. (Photo and caption by Brandon Wade/Reuters)

Fish and other seafood are coming there from all around the globe. Seafood Market is full of different kinds of live fish, live shellfish, and live seafood on display in crystal clear tanks and it's common to see 5-star chefs, retailers and expats to source for fresh and high-quality seafood supplies for reasonable prices. While it is a wholesale fish market, since many Guangzhou restaurants and businesses come to purchase their seafood here, the public is welcome to come and even purchase. Many local Chinese have the vendors slice up fresh salmon fillets to take home or carry seafood into one of the nearby specialty restaurants, where they will cook if for them and serve it with vegetables and other side dishes of their choice. One of the biggest attractions for both, tourists and buyers, on market are crocodiles, which are brought there alive in wooden cases with taped jaws so they can?t accidentally bite. They are from crocodile farms from Guangdong, China and from Vietnam. Crocodile meat is popular in most Asian countries and it is consider as delicate one. Crocodiles weight from 10 to 25 kg and bigger ones are about 2 years old. They cost about 70 RMB (8.90 EURO) when bout as whole, or if you buy as parts most expensive and appreciated parts are paws 120 RMB (15.26 EURO) per kg, and tail 100 RMB (12.72 EURO) per kg.
