Palestinian barber Ramadan Odwan styles and straightens the hair of a customer with fire at his salon in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip February 2, 2017. In Ramadan Odwan's barbershop in Gaza, hair isn't just blow-dried, it's blowtorch-dried. “People have gone crazy about it, many people are curious to go through the experience and they are not afraid”, he told Reuters. “People here love adventures”. Odwan, 37, is not the first stylist in the world to use flame to straighten hair, but his craft is unique in the Gaza Strip. In his salon in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, Odwan applied what he described as a protective liquid coating to a customer's hair – he declined to disclose its contents – before aiming for the head and pressing the button on a small blowtorch. “I control how long I apply fire, I keep it on and off for 10 seconds or 15 seconds. It is completely safe and I have not encountered any accident since I started it two months ago”, Odwan added. Odwan charges 20 shekels ($5.20) for a haircut and fire-straightening. A barber for the past 18 years, he said part of the reason he uses the technique is to show that Palestinian barbers are as “professional as those out there around the world”. Boat crew members train on the waters of the Tonle Sap River on the morning of the first day of the Water Festival on November 13, 2016 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The yearly three-day Water Festival is one of the most important holidays in Cambodia and celebrates the end of the rainy season and the start of the rice harvesting. The Festival also coincides with the Tonle Sap river reversing course, which it does twice a year. Approximately 2 million people are expected to attend this year's festival, during which 259 boats and nearly 20,000 oarsmen will participate in the races. After a fatal stampede resulting in the death of some 353 people during the Water Festival in 2010, it has been cancelled four times over the past five years, with weather used as an official excuse. Emergency workers save a shepherd dog from a beach during a forest fire on August 2, 2021 in Mugla, a Marmaris' district, as Turkey struggles against its deadliest wildfires in decades. Health workers wearing face masks spray disinfectant liquid on sacrificial animals amid concerns over the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the pandemic COVID-19 disease ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha at an animal market in Hyderabad, southern Pakistan, 21 July 2020. Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of the Sacrifice, is the second and holiest of the two main Islamic holidays celebrated each year (the other one being Eid al-Fitr). Every year, on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims around the world ritually slaughter a sacrificial animal and split the meat into three parts: one is reserved for the family, another for friends and relatives, and the third is given to the poor and needy. The Saudi Supreme Court has declared that the first day of Eid al-Adha this year falls on 31 July. (Photo by Nadeem Khawar/EPA/EFE)
