A YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler inspired me to create this series, "Smoking Kids". The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer's focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal impact upon the viewer and compel them to truly see the acts of smoking rather than making assumptions about the person doing the act. ... ~Frieke Janssen

A British photographer has captured the hilarious expressions pulled by dogs as they go for a run. From popping eyes to lolling tongues, Nick Ridley from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire has managed to perfectly pause the pooches in time as they pull a host of funny faces in the great outdoors. The 56-year-old uses a fast shutter speed and lies on the ground snapping away as the dogs run towards him in order to get the perfect shot. Here: A Dogue de Bordeaux. Slauerhoff Bridge, Netherlands

The Slauerhoffbrug (English: Slauerhoff Bridge) is a fully automatic bascule bridge (aka tail bridge) in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. It uses two arms to swing a section of road in and out of place within the road itself. It is also known as the “Slauerhoffbrug ‘Flying’ Drawbridge”. A tail bridge can quickly and efficiently be raised and lowered from one pylon (instead of hinges). This quickly allows water traffic to pass while only briefly stalling road traffic. The deck is 15 m by 15 m. It is painted in yellow and blue, representative of Leeuwarden's flag and seal.
