With its huge eyes, comical name and diminutive size, Mark R. Smith’s image of a baby Hawaiian bobtail squid can’t help but raise a smile. A curiously endearing creature, the cephalopod is just 1.5cm across, its mantle cavity bearing more than a passing resemblance to a rather natty shower cap. But it is also a beautiful example of symbiosis – nature’s version of “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” – for on the underside of the squid is a light organ which houses bioluminescent bacteria. The squid offers the bacteria protection and food, while the bacteria emit a glow – a handy trait that the squid uses to offset its silhouette, helping it to evade predators in the depths below. Artist Jesús Prudencio loves cars and movies, if you couldn’t tell by his beautiful series of movie posters, titled Cars and Films, that focuses on an iconic automobile from each movie. From Back to the Future to Pulp Fiction, The Shining to The Italian Job, Prudencio’s colorfully minimal illustrations are a delight for any fan of cars and/or films.

You might think Ysabel LeMay’s works are hyper-realistic paintings but they’re created through an innovative technique called photo fusion. The Quebec-born, U.S.-based artist takes hundreds of photographs for each piece, attunes the light and visual properties, then assembles one detail at a time in a painterly fashion to form a single composition. Each work takes 4 to 8 weeks on average.

The Schimmel Pegasus Grand Piano looks more like a spaceship or something else from the Sci-Fi channel than a piano. Schimmel made 14 of these about 10 years ago for people like Prince, Eddie Murphy and Lenny Kravitz. If you have tonnes of money, there is currently one for sale. They are asking US$110,000.
