In this photograph taken on December 14, 2016, an Indian craftsman works on unfinished cricket bats in a factory in Meerut, some 70 kms north- east of New Delhi. As Indian factory worker Jitender Singh carves out another big- hitting slab of thick willow he insists MCC proposals to limit the size of cricket bats won' t tame Twenty20 marauders. “I don' t think the thickness matters. It' s more about the balance of the bat and the talent of the batsman”, says Singh, who has made bats for many stars, including South Africa's AB de Villiers. The World Cricket committee of the MCC, the guardians of the game, recommended in December 2016 that limitations be placed on the width and depth of bats because it had become too easy to smash fours and sixes. Students receive a group punishment during a military-style close-order drill class at the Qide Education Center in Beijing February 19, 2014. The Qide Education Center is a military-style boot camp which offers treatment for internet addiction. As growing numbers of young people in China immerse themselves in the cyber world, spending hours playing games online, worried parents are increasingly turning to boot camps to crush addiction. Military-style boot camps, designed to wean young people off their addiction to the internet, number as many as 250 in China alone. (Photo by Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters)

At this year's Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, no matter how elaborate the opening ceremony or how sophisticated the live broadcasts, the final lap of athletics races will be announced the traditional way by ringing an old-fashioned bell. Omega, the official timekeeper of the event, has ordered 21 bells, forged almost entirely by hand by Blondeau's Bell Foundry in the Jura Mountains in Switzerland. Each last-lap bell is branded with the RIO 2016 logo and circled with the words “2016 GAMES OF THE XXXI OLYMPIAD”. (Photo by Denis Balibouse/Reuters)

Figure skating couple Madison Chock and Evan Bates, of the USA, practice their dance routine during a training session at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Thursday, February 3, 2022, in Beijing. At the Beijing Winter Games, opening Friday, it’s a homecoming of sorts for one of the world’s most sprawling diasporas – often sweet and sometimes complicated, but always a reflection of where they are, where they come from and the Olympic spirit itself. “Every time I’m on the bus, I’m just looking out and studying the city and just imagining my roots are here, my ancestors are here”, says Chock, whose father is Chinese-Hawaiian, with family ties to rural China.
